The US-CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) is aware of public reports of a fraudulent email scam circulating via messages that falsely appear to be from the U.S. Federal Reserve. These email messages contain information about a phishing scam and links for users to follow to obtain additional information about the scam. If a user follows the links, they will be redirected to a malicious website where a PDF exploit is used to install malicious code on the affected system.

As always, it's in your best interest NEVER to click a link, picture, attachment inside of an email. If the message has an attachment and it's from a reliable source, first save the attachment to your computer, then scan it for viruses and malware. If it comes back clean, then it should be safe to open. It's always best to simply delete messages from unsolicited sources or that you suspect to be spam, especially if they're asking you to click links, etc. A few good sense tips include:

  • Why would your bank email you, wanting you to click something in an email? Wouldn't they notify you by mail, by phone, or ask you to log into their website so the transaction is secure and recorded?
  • Foreign businessmen do not seek out any random person in the United States with whom to give his $39,000,000 to. If this person is a real businessman (which in this case they are not) they would be looking for ways to invest their money to get an ample return.
  • If something seems to good to be true, it is. If all else fails, search http://www.snopes.com and see for yourself if it's real or a hoax. Be careful, though, because if you discover a brand new hoax that hasn't hit snopes yet, you may drop your guard. Always trust your gut feeling.

When in doubt, you can always feel free to contact us here for help.
